I would agree that the lack of spectators at Blackpool this year was not down to lack of interest, but the financial recession in the UK today? Perhaps the people not there were people unable to afford the petrol money, hotel costs etc (for those living down the south of england this is a big problem). As we all know most of the world is in financial diffciculty right now so I would think that money plays a big part in whether those spectate at Blackpool or not. Perhaps some Japanese were scared off by Swine Flu - the outbreaks in the UK were on the news everyday for a week before Blackpool - but considerating they would have already sent their entry in and booked hotels for Blackpool I would be surprised if this was the reason for most Japanese entries as it would have lost them (in some cases) a lot of money. Sunshine2 - Do you mean that the lower turn out of proffessionals dancing latin meant less family members/friends spectating? This year in the proffessional rising star latin on Friday 22nd May there was 7 rounds, with around 210 proffesionals dancing. In 2008 there was also 7 rounds, with around 230 couples dancing. I suppose, if 20 couples are missing - all who in 2008 had at least 5 friends/family members supporting them - you may see a decrease in the amount of spectators viewing this event, but I think it's scraping the barrel a bit as if a few couples take more family members than usual etc it can be easily made up. Lack of interest is also somewhat questionable - 2009 so far has seen more competition turnouts overall than this time in 2008. More people watching "Strictly Come Dancing" or "Dancing With The Stars"? Perhaps. I too would like to see all couples dancing at 2009 Cervia Italian Open, 2009 Assen Dutch Open and WDC Amateur Leage 2009. I would also be dissapointed if the rumours regarding the 2009 International Championships at Brentwood this year turn out to be true and less couples from abroad turn out to dance in all categories (including juniors & youths). Answer: POLITCAL PRESSURE has little , if not anything to do with the above. Sorry, but I disagree. Can you actually say that a lesser turnout of couples dancing at World events like the UK Open has nothing to do with political pressure? Sunshine2, how do you explain couples who really should have been competing and did not? Top am & pro couples who did not come to Blackpool, yet in the month before or after travelled to an event in a different country not as important is the UK Open? What is the logic to that? There is political pressure in every competition on as high scale as Blackpool. Whether that is the reason for all couples not going is irelevant. Whether we choose to ignore it or not - it's there. I have commented on the turn out of spectators, which I considered lower, thank God, the second balcony was not as hot this time, spectators with no seats were not fighting to take empty , paid for seats. I have not commented about the dancers. The spectators attendance, which I observed as lower this year, had little to do with political pressures......unless the standing spectators were competitors who were cheering on, admiring, secretly taping ( a big no no ) their professional idols. You are correct, people have less moneys - yes, even us, the considered wealthy, and considered able to afford and absorb all the increases laid upon us , the dancers. We also must think twice before we travel , including the excellent destination Blackpool, but we are used to self deprivation to afford that extra private lesson, we'd rather starve. No one can stop dancers from attending Blackpool. Dancers just ignore the raised eyebrows, and frowning faces, they cannot do harm us as long the dancers stay, how to say...united, and together. I wish I had an answer to your question Stuart, but refuse to accept that the top Pros and Amateurs have become puppets who cannot act freely anymore. That would be the end to me, and I am Sunshine2 not a quitter.
